<image:title>Talent Development - “My entrepreneurial journey in high school is definitely one of my core experiences. It began with the 7D6N Residential Camp for Leadership & Entrepreneurship, where I learned key entrepreneurial concepts like the LEAN Startup Method. Entrepreneurship is about empathizing with people, defining problems, and developing marketable solutions. Our Project Work (PW) focused on reducing food waste in F&B businesses and our mentor was from Sembcorp. Under his guidance, we conducted research, interviewed F&B businesses, and developed an AI-powered smart bin as our solution. With the resources provided, we managed to build a working prototype. Our PW journey was far from smooth; we faced challenges like miscommunication, buggy code, and faulty components. This brings me to my most valuable takeaway from the programme: to have a positive mindset to push through the challenges and not give up when the going gets tough. The key to success in entrepreneurship is resilience rather than giving up in challenging situations. The programme did not just teach me how to build a startup; it instilled critical skills like calculated decision-making and adaptability, lessons that extend far beyond entrepreneurship. My experience was truly enriching and remains an invaluable part of my personal growth.”</image:title>

<image:caption>““Personally, serving as the General Secretary of Project Integrate was a role that has been nothing short of fulfilling. Through the course of the year, our team faced multiple challenges - with the biggest one being that we were unable to accommodate the busy schedules of the migrant workers. However, our team managed to work around the various constraints, organising fortnightly sports sessions and activities for different cultural festivities. In terms of outreach, we were also able to spread awareness about our cause through physical and online means, with our Panel Discussion with Migrant Workers Centre being conducted in front of the entire lower secondary cohort during Racial Harmony Day. Overall, service learning has really helped broaden my worldview and allowed me to encounter perspectives I would have never previously considered. Most importantly, I was able to really enjoy the experience because of the people that served alongside me - my teammates.” - Tan Yu Ming, General Secretary, Project Integrate 8.0</image:caption>

      <image:title>Sabbaticals</image:title>
<image:caption>“Although I have only been in Hwa Chong for 2 years, I must say that my experience with sabbaticals is truly unique. The Sabbatical programme takes place at the end of Terms 1 and 2 and allows us to explore something we have not tried before. There are many sabbaticals that students can choose from. These include Handball, Shooting, Checkmate and Gambit, and Eco Wildlife, among others. These sabbatical programmes allow us students to explore different domains, such as sports and the arts, and help us to develop various skills, such as teamwork, critical thinking, gratitude and creativity. In Secondary One, I took part in a sabbatical programme called “Power Up and Excel with VBA” which explored the use of VBA, a coding language, and Power BI, a chart creation platform, to better understand big data. Through this programme, I learnt how to use Excel and VBA to better filter and organize data. In addition, I learnt how to create charts to help others visualize the data that I have. I feel that this programme helps us to become well-rounded individuals in society, and also take a break from school life. Sabbaticals are always very fruitful for me.” - Reuben Seah, Secondary 2 student</image:caption>

<image:caption>“I appreciate the Sabbatical Programme for making my education at Hwa Chong Institution more holistic, as it allows us to pursue our interests and develop in an all-rounded way. I have participated in numerous Sabbatical activities since Secondary 1, and the one that I enjoyed the most focused on Table Tennis. We had patient and friendly instructors, who were devoted to sharing as much of their knowledge about the sport as possible through the week. It was a good chance to develop myself athletically, while taking a breather from lessons as well.” - Ernest Tan Rui Yang, Secondary 4 student</image:caption>

One lesson we would learn about Paul's Wheel of Reasoning, and in the next we would learn the basics of 儒家思想 (Confucianism). What I enjoyed too was how the Thinking Programme was a safe space where my classmates and I could face each other and discuss meaningful topics as a group, and where each of us became both a student and a teacher of the class.” - Ang Ben Wei, Secondary 3 student</image:caption>

<image:caption>Many receive the opportunity at Upper Secondary to appreciate Chinese culture through immersion trips to different parts of China (pre-pandemic). Hwa Chongians deepen their understanding of the country via lessons at partner schools, interaction with local students, field trips, and industrial visits. Given the current travel restrictions, e-immersion programmes through virtual means have been carried out. </image:caption>

<image:caption>“I was fortunate to be part of the Beijing Immersion programme in 2019. Besides providing our class the opportunity to bond over the span of 3 weeks, the immersion broadened my perspectives, deepened my understanding, and increased my appreciation of Chinese culture, traditions, contemporary developments, and even cuisine! The most thrilling of interactions with local students and teachers, the most engaging of tours of the beautiful city and its historical landmarks – these all made for a memorable experience, one that exemplifies Hwa Chong’s firm belief in a well-rounded education.” - Jacob Tseng Wei-Jie, J1 student</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The Secondary One Annual Camp (SOAC) marks the end of a freshman's initiation into Hwa Chong Institution. It being the first camp I had ever participated in, I entered with nothing but nervousness, yet left after 3 days with fond memories, new experiences, and a well-bonded class. What truly stuck with me was how my seniors, some barely a year older, had helped in facilitating the camp so meaningfully. They were the ones who inspired me to return to SOAC as a facilitator myself. Despite the tiring training we had to undergo, witnessing my juniors grow in the face of adversities made everything worthwhile.” - David Wang Jia Bao, SOAC camp facilitator</image:caption>

<image:caption>“The National Track & Field Finals is an annual event that the entire school looks forward to (pre-Covid), when we make our way to the National Stadium to support our competing athletes. While the last few years have definitely been memorable because of our being quadruple champions, I remember it more fondly as a lively affair, especially when we cheer our hearts out to spur on our Hwa Chong Team. As a student leader, I have personally led the school population in cheering too. Despite our hoarse throats at the end of the day, this experience has made my Hwa Chong life meaningful, as to me, it is a symbol of the Hwa Chong spirit: to inspire each other to achieve the best that we can.” - Joshua Ng Yong Quan, student leader</image:caption>

      <image:title>Leadership - Values In Action (VIA) Council</image:title>
<image:caption>The VIA (Values-In-Action) Council is a student-led organization formed to encourage students of Hwa Chong to become active members of our community through the organising of various community outreach events. In addition we wish to help raise social awareness and inculcate a sense of responsibility and empathy for the community in among Hwa Chongians. The VIA Council helps to organise school-wide service-learning events to allow students to gain a better understanding of our community. We also intend to serve as a bridge between the students and the community - by establishing contact with different organizations interested in providing CIP/CEP opportunities - and by creating a platform for students to easily contact these organizations. The VIA Council continues to strive to make an impact within our school and create an environment where students are not afraid to reach out to those in need but instead are willing to step up and take initiative in contributing and giving back to the community.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The National Education Council seeks to promote criticality and authenticity in discussing issues pertinent to Singapore. This includes issues of geopolitics, diversity and security against the backdrop of an increasingly globalised world. The Council does these through student-centricity and student-directedness. In promoting authentic and critical discussions, students are taught to helm activities for their peers, allowing for greater relatability. The Council also taps on the talents of the larger school community in developing materials and resources, allowing for the aforementioned goals of student-centricity and authenticity. Since its inception in 2022, the Council has been involved in major Student Development Experiences such as Total Defence Day, International Friendship Day, NRIC Presentation Ceremony, and Racial Harmony Day. It has also liaised with a variety of internal and external parters to deliver memorable experiences. The list includes HCI’s EC3, 1 Singapore Infantry Regiment, Transient Workers Count Too (TWC2), Migrant Workers Centre, Madrasah Aljunied, etc. The Council hopes to create new partnerships, while leveraging on existing partnerships to strengthen the quality of programmes offered to the larger school community.</image:caption>
